I read Neal Stephenson's In the Beginning was the Command Line last night (the dead-tree version, bought at an actual book store). I don't agree with all his conclusions, but it's certainly the most well-reasoned and thought-provoking essay on OSes that I've seen (not to mention, the Americanization of the world, TV-addicted culture, and Disney). I highly recommend it to anyone involved in computers who, therefore, can't avoid having to listen to (if not get entangled in) constant OS rhetoric and debate.
