Bob Frankston and David Reed write, in a very interesting essay, "The DNS and IPV4 scarcities are artificial issues born of ignorance. The solution is in understanding what they are and what mechanisms we do need." For those of us who have our own domain (or a few), the lack of reasonable addresses does not seem like much of a problem. But, if you accept the fact that everyone and every company really does need an identity in the new networked world, and the fact that we've only scratched the service of that, the need for a better system becomes obvious.
