Jakob's latest AlertBox, about taking expert users into consideration when designing sites (not just making things as easy as possible for novices), makes some good points. A big drawback of most web apps is that they're tedious to use, even when you know them very well, whereas most client-installed apps these days have deep levels of customization and shortcuts that expert users can take advantage of. It's really not hard to build in, web builders just aren't used to doing this yet. For example, when I get done typing this into Blogger (just to use a random example -- or, actually, the only one I know), instead of having to switch to my mouse and click on the Post button, I will push ctrl+enter (just like an email), and it will be posted -- or ctrl+shift+enter, and it will be published to my site. There's a long ways to go, but this sort of handy feature is very nice for experienced users, while completely non-interfering with a new user's learning process.
