Dandot reveals the truth about what happens when you try to run something like the ILOVEYOU virus from an email attachment in Outlook. Actually, I think it depends on your security settings. I tried it on Outlook 2000 as well and did get the option to open it directly from the email. However, I also did get a warning that stated it may contain a virus -- as did everyone else who ran the thing. The clueless journalists and Microsoft bashers who are spreading the impression that if you use Outlook, period, you're leaving yourself open to attack should really figure out what they're talking about. Pretty much any email client could receive an attached executable that, if opened in the same way, could thrash their system every which way from Sunday. Outlook just adds the ability to propogate itself. Is this a bad thing? As a developer, I see it as a highly useful thing that would allow me to do cool (good!) stuff. Is it a case of overestimating the sophistication of the average user? Probably. My guess is that the default security restrictions will be increased next time and that will pretty much take care of the problem -- especially since the people who would most likely run this kind of stuff unquestioningly are the same people who would never change their default settings.
