I've noticed that on the web, there's an assumption that bad taste goes along with low technical know-how. Why is this? For example, look at the crap that theGlobe.com sends its members (yes, I subject myself to these things to learn what these companies are doing). Why would this be something you'd welcome in your inbox? And why are they throwing away the opportunity they have to form a bond with their members with this plastic-coated crap? If you look around at the web sites of those pursuing newbies or the "mass market," you'll see much of the same type of stuff. Perhaps its just a symptom of those who pursue these types of businesses (which are, largely, VC-driven) and their own lack of syle and good design sense. Perhaps it's just an appeal to the lowest common denominator which, live TV, makes good business sense (at least for those battling it out for the top -- theoretically). But I think there's a market opportunity for those who treat people as if they have a little more intelligence/sophistication/taste even if they happen to not be very computer literate (yet). The iMac is a testament to this. Speaking of, I'm sounding like Steve Jobs in this post. I better stop.
