Tim O'Reilly: Response to Dave Winer on O'Reilly Investment in Pyra. I suppose I'm the only one who hasn't weighed in on this publicly. Should I? I don't have a lot to add to Tim's email. Dale Dougherty actually asked me about using Blogger instead of Manila before he launched O'ReillyNet. I basically said that Manila seemed more attuned to their purposes, since they were doing more essay/column-style weblogs, instead of "text-burst-style" -- and since they were perfectly capable and willing to run Dave's server software on their site (unlike most of our users). Which brings up the competition thing. Unlike Dave, I don't see us as competing "head-on." Perhaps that's because of the features he says he's left out, and his plans for the future that I don't know about. But as it stands now, I think we offer very different things and appeal to really different segments of the market. But, like Dave, I do think that competition is a good thing. It grows the market, and it makes both our offerings stronger. I guess we'll see. Nonetheless, I'm sorry Dave feels used or that something was kept from him intentionally. Tim thought I had probably mentioned it to Dave. I thought they probably had. If we thought about it at all. I know for certain that we didn't gain information or anything else because of O'Reilly's use of Dave's software. And if we're really direct competitors, if anything, it's hurt us.
