The other day, I heard a radio commercial for AT&T cable internet access. The premise was a lame pizza shop advertising super-speedy delivery to everyone -- when, in truth, they could only offer it to the few nearby -- and comparing this to how DSL is advertised all over even though it's not available to some people and speed varies depending on how far you are from the telco. Of course, AT&T cable was the answer to your frustrating high-speed connection problems. The disclaimer at the end of the ad then went on to say: "Not available in all areas. Speed varies..." It would have been funny if you thought they even realized their hipocrisy. Man, AT&T is annoying. But not as annoying as PacBell (with whom I'm currently in DSL limbo hell). So I went and checked: "Unfortunately AT&T@Home is not available at [your address] at this time." Shock. (Back in September of 1998, when the local cable company was TCI, they told me cable Internet access would be available all over San Francisco by December of that year. When I called again in December, they said they had no schedule at all for roll-out in the Bay Area.)
