Here's the thing: If we thought the MetaWeblog API suited our needs, we would gladly adopt it. We're not interested in doing extra work for the fun of it. Yes, we could maybe force it to work, which would be messy and confusing and, we feel, worse in the long haul for everyone trying to use is (with Blogger).
What Steve presented on the list was, as stated, preliminary documentation, requesting feedback from developers. He got a lot of it, most very reasonable, and has spent a lot of time this week responding to the feedback and making some changes.
We're hearing a lot of support for what we're ending up with.
